Church Staff

Our Pastor – E. B. Shoemaker

I didn’t grow up Brethren, I was actually raised in the United Methodist Church.  I did attend church regularly as a child, but in my teen years I strayed away from the church and crowded my life with other interests.  I still believed in God, I just didn’t include Him in my life.  When I was 15, I accepted Christ into my life at the home of a friend.  I was a product of the “Jesus Freaks” of the 1970’s and many of the people that I used to party with, I was now praying with at Friday night prayer meetings.

Later that same year, still at the age of 15, I felt God calling me into the ministry.  I questioned that many times at first, but God continued to reassure me that His calling was real.  I attended a Baptist church for a while, then began to visit many different types of churches and finally, after a number of years, I was attracted to the Church of the Brethren.  I felt that was where God wanted me to be.

I graduated from Eastern Mennonite University with a B.S. degree in Christian Ministries and continued into Seminary at Eastern Mennonite Seminary.  During this time, I worked full-time as a welder for 21 years.  I also did lay speaking in the United Methodist Church for several years, and then as I entered the Church of the Brethren, I was licensed and began pasturing on a part-time basis for about 10 years.

I began as a full-time pastor in 1996 and came to Roanoke in 2006 at my present location at Poages Mill.  I feel that God has brought me to where I am today, and He continues to be at work in my life.  I owe everything to God and I serve a risen Lord.  I am just a sinner saved by grace, but I count myself fortunate to have been called by God to serve as a pastor.  I am God’s servant, and I am open to His leading in all that I do.

I am married to a wonderful woman (Cindy) that God has placed by my side and we have 4 grown children.  We reside in the city of Roanoke, VA.
